Must-Haves: Apps for Finding Flights

Hi everyone! As any traveler knows, one of the most expensive costs when it comes to traveling is… booking the flight! Well, the flight apps that I use help me to not only find cheap flights, but also make booking a flight one of the smaller expenses of planning a trip. I have listed these three apps below—give them a try for your next trip!

Looking for a cheap flight? Try Skyscanner, Frontier, & Hopper!

Skyscanner

  • What is it? It helps you to find flights, hotels, and car rentals. I have only used it for flights, and Skyscanner never fails to find the cheapest option. After selecting your airports and dates, Skyscanner provides you with a list of flights offered by different airlines. You can then filter and sort (by price of course!) the given options to find the best one for you. After selecting the flight I want, I go to the airline’s website to verify the price and to book the flight. To be clear, I have never booked a flight through Skyscanner. I only use it as a way to quickly compare different airline prices.

  • How can you access it? Skyscanner can be accessed through their website here or through their downloadable app.

  • Best feature(s)? Skyscanner gives you the option to select “Everywhere” as your destination. This means the site will show you the cheapest places you can fly to (including within the states and internationally!!!) from your “from” airport. This type of option is especially useful for last minute trips.

Frontier

  • What is it? Frontier airlines is a low-fare airline flying within the US, Mexico, Jamaica, and Dominican Republic. Frontier, however, is a smaller airline that flies to a smaller number of airports as compared to larger airlines. To see all the airports Frontier flies in and out of, click here.

  • How can you access it? Frontier can be access through their website here or through their downloadable app.

  • Best feature(s)? (1) Frontier is CHEAP! I mean I’ve flown Orlando, FL-to-Trenton, NJ-for-$40-round-trip or Orlando, FL-to-California-for-$196-round-trip CHEAP! Now, of course flight prices change depending on the day of the week and destination. However, Frontier offers flights at prices that are almost always far cheaper then most other airlines. (2) Frontier frequently sends out coupons (anywhere from 10-90% off tickets) via email. Although the savings are great, make sure to read the fine print (Does it apply to specific days of the week?, Specific airports?, etc). (3) Frontier has a membership program. The program, called Discount Den, offers lower prices to its members for a yearly payment of $49.99. I am a member myself and I can tell you it is worth every penny. In reality, the membership usually ends up paying for itself in just one flight.

Hopper

  • What is it? If you are planning a trip in the future (at least 2+ months in the future), Hopper is a must-have. This app allows you to find cheap flights, but most importantly, allows you to track the future price of a ticket.

  • How can you access it? Hopper is currently only available as an app download.

  • Best feature(s)? Essentially, Hopper tracks the prices of flights and notifies the user if they should purchases the flight now, or whether or not there’s a chance the flight price will decrease at some future time. To start, the user inputs the “from” airport (or city), the “to” airport (or city) and the dates. Hopper then provides you with the current cheapest price of that flight and gives you the option to “watch” the trip. Watching the trip means they will track the price of the flight and send you updates. They will let you know if it is likely the price will increase or decrease in the future as well as if they think it is best for you to buy at the time of the notification. I have used Hopper a number of times, all for trips I was planning to take at least 2 months out. Most recently, I use the app to track flights from NYC (JFK) to Seville, Spain for May 2017 eventually finding a round trip flight for $520 by December 2016.

Hopefully you guys found this useful. I really do use these apps whenever I plan a trip and they help me save a pretty good chunk of change. I would love to hear about your experience with these apps as well as feedback on what you would like me to post about in the future; please go to the “give a shout” section at the bottom of the homepage to send me any feedback.

Thanks & safe travels!
